VirtualBruges Museums - St.-Saviour's Cathedral

This museum has a very interesting artistic heritage. When the Romanesque church of St.-Donatian, the oldest cathedral in Bruges on Burg Square, was demolished in the late eighteenth century, the main art treasures were transferred to St.-Saviour's Museum. Here you will find masterpieces from the sixteenth century, including a mature Renaissance version of "The last supper" dating from 1559, one of the most beautiful works by Pieter Pourbus. A work with the same title is on display at the Groeninge Museum.

In addition to the retable fragments "The Descent of the Holy Spirit" and "The Consecration of a bishop", which date from the 15th and 16th centuries respectively, we must not forget "Daniel in the lion's den", a remarkable painted wooden sculpture dating from the late 15th century.
