VirtualBruges Museums - Gothic Chamber

City Hall
Part of the historic City Hall of Bruges, which is situated on Burg Square, serves as a museum. The rest of the building is still in use. It is possible to visit the Gothic room whenever it is not being used for festive occasions or meetings. It is located on the first floor, and has impressive decorated vault ceilings from the late 14th and early 15th century.

The stone consoles bear Old Flemish inscriptions which refer to the four seasons, the twelve months and the four natural elements. The twelve vault keystones, where the ceiling meets the wall, show Biblical scenes from the Old Testament. The paintings provide a brief historical summary of Bruges.

There are also many historical figures, coats of arms and saints to be seen. On the western wall there is a magnificent neo-Gothic chimney-piece, topped by a statue of Our Lady and two angels. Her cloak shows the two angels pointing to the coat of arms of the city of Bruges.
