VirtualBruges Museums - St.-Sebastian's Archers Guild

This archers' guild was probably founded in the 14th century, and it was in fact part of the city's police force. Their Guildhall is situated on the corner of the Carmerstraat and the city walls. Their coat of arms shows the Cross of Jerusalem, which gives reason to believe that they may have taken part in the crusades. Above the chimney-piece in the royal chamber there is a memorial to the famous English king, Charles II. A bust of Charles II is on view in the Gruuthuse Museum.

Although this King only stayed here with his brother for six months, he paid for this very stately meeting room. The Guild used his donation to purchase a number of works of art. Here we also find a work by Jan Garemijn: 'St.-Sebastian being helped by angels (1751)'. Just like the St. George's Guild, this Guild's royal chamber also contains various trophies and ornaments.
