Almshouses
Almshouses, which were also called poorhouses, were built all over the city from the 14th century onwards. These are usually a number of small houses, situated or grouped around an interior garden, with a pump, a chapel or a well. The houses are now used to accommodate elderly or needy people. They were endowed by guilds or donated by wealthy people for charitable purposes. The houses still bear the names of the inhabitants or donors.
