There are many canals criss-crossing the city centre. Most of these are part of the river 'Reie'. The canals used to enter the city centre via the Minnewater. The waterways network has undergone many changes over the centuries. Some parts have been covered over, and others were filled in. Fortunately most of these attractive waterways have been preserved.
