Groenerei
There are thirty-one bridges across the atmospheric canals. These narrow stone bridges provided ideal protection against any intruders. The bridges had to have a humpback to allow flat-bottomed boats to reach the inner city even when the water level was high. The architects were not as good at wider spans. They therefore built their bridges with the necessary round arches to support the whole structure. We can also see that in places where the bridge was at any risk, the canals were narrowed.
