Lake of Love - Park South EntranceWe're standing on the inner 'Gentpoortvest' city wall. There are three sets of city walls around Bruges. In about 900 Bruges built its first wall around Burg Square, enclosing the city centre as it was then. Due to the city's growing economic activities, more and more people came to live around the safety of the castle, and new parishes sprang up. This created the need for a second set of city walls in 1127. The third city walls were built between 1297 and 1300. The water coming from the Damse Vaart, the Oostendse Vaart and the Gentse Vaart completely surrounds the city. Only the section between the Ezelpoort and the Dampoort has now been filled in. |
