't ZandBruges used to be flooded regularly by the sea. When the waves retreated, a band of dunes was left behind, and the wind blew the sand up against the city's fortifications, which gave rise to the name 't Zand. This used to be the site of Bruges' station. 't Zand is now Bruges' largest traffic-free square. This peaceful square is surrounded by trees and friendly pavement caf»s. |
