Burg SquareThis is the oldest part of the city. Since the very beginning this has been the centre of municipal, ecclesiastical and political power. The count's castle used to be situated here on the Burg Square. We're standing on the north side of the square, which used to be occupied entirly by St.-Donatian's Church, which was first built in 961. Unfortunately nothing remains of that building. Its foundations were discovered during excavations in 1955, and some of the material which was dug up was used to build the hotel on the corner of the Burg Square and the Burgstraat. The floor plan of the church can still be seen on the ground. A choir wall was built using stones taken from that church, and on it stands a model of this originally Carolingian building. |
